Order of Authors in A List
Rules for the order of multiple authors in a list vary significantly between fields of research, but are generally consistent within a particular field. Some fields list authors in order of their degree of involvement in the work, with the most active contributors listed first; other fields, such as Mathematics or Engineering (e.g. Control theory), sometimes list them alphabetically. Biologists tend to place a principal investigator (supervisor or lab head) last in an author list; organic chemists might put him or her first.
Although listing authors in order of the involvement in the project seems straightforward, it often leads to conflict. A study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal found that more than two-thirds of 919 corresponding authors disagreed with their coauthors regarding contributions of each author.

Famous quotes containing the words order, authors and/or list:
“In order for the artist to have a world to express he must first be situated in this world, oppressed or oppressing, resigned or rebellious, a man among men.”
—Simone De Beauvoir (19081986)
“Paper is cheap, and authors need not now erase one book before they write another. Instead of cultivating the earth for wheat and potatoes, they cultivate literature, and fill a place in the Republic of Letters. Or they would fain write for fame merely, as others actually raise crops of grain to be distilled into brandy.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Thirtythe promise of a decade of loneliness, a thinning list of single men to know, a thinning brief-case of enthusiasm, thinning hair.”
—F. Scott Fitzgerald (18961940)
