Famous quotes containing the words south, african, motorcycle and/or grand:

“There are two places in the world where men can most effectively disappear—the city of London and the South Seas.”
    —Herman Melville (1819–1891)

“I think it’s unfair for people to try to make successful blacks feel guilty for not feeling guilty.... We’re unique in that we’re not supposed to enjoy the things we’ve worked so hard for.”
—Patricia Grayson, African American administrator. As quoted in Time magazine, p. 59 (March 13, 1989)

“Actually being married seemed so crowded with unspoken rules and odd secrets and unfathomable responsibilities that it had no more occurred to her to imagine being married herself than it had to imagine driving a motorcycle or having a job. She had, however, thought about being a bride, which had more to do with being the center of attention and looking inexplicably, temporarily beautiful than it did with sharing a double bed with someone with hairy legs and a drawer full of boxer shorts.”
    —Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)

“I was walking along and I’m looking at the tall buildings. And I got to thinking about what Thoreau said: “They created a lot of grand palaces here, but they forgot to create the noblemen to put in them.””
    —Robert Riskin (1897–1955)
