The 1993 UEFA Champions League Final was a football match between French club Marseille and Italian club Milan, played on 26 May 1993 at the Olympiastadion in Munich, Germany.
The final, which followed the first-ever UEFA Champions League group stage, saw Ivorian-born Marseille defender Basile Boli score the only goal of the game in the 43rd minute to give l'OM their first European Cup title. It was the first time that a French team had won the European Cup, and no French side has won the trophy since.
The club and their president Bernard Tapie would later be found to have been involved in a match-fixing scandal during the 1992-93 season (in which Marseille allegedly paid Valenciennes FC to lose a match), which saw them relegated to Division 2 and banned from participation in European football for the following season. As the scandal affected only French league matches, Marseille's status as 1993 UEFA champion was not affected.

Famous quotes containing the words champions, league and/or final:
“Myths and legends die hard in America. We love them for the extra dimension they provide, the illusion of near-infinite possibility to erase the narrow confines of most mens reality. Weird heroes and mould-breaking champions exist as living proof to those who need it that the tyranny of the rat race is not yet final.”
—Hunter S. Thompson (b. 1939)
“Stereotypes fall in the face of humanity. You toodle along, thinking that all gay men wear leather after dark and should never, ever be permitted around a Little League field. And then one day your best friend from college, the one your kids adore, comes out to you.”
—Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
“So that the old joy, modest as cake, as wine and friendship
Will stay with us at the last, backed by the night
Whose ruse gave it our final meaning.”
—John Ashbery (b. 1927)
