100 North Main - History

History

Finished in 1965, 100 North Main has remained a focal point of the Memphis riverfront skyline. The building was designed by Robert Lee Hall, the architect of Memphis' largest office building (based on square footage), Clark Tower, as well as Patterson Hall at the University of Memphis.

100 North Main is an almost identical, taller version of the 633 Building in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Due to its proximity to various municipal buildings, 100 North Main's tenant base has consisted primarily of attorneys, title companies, and various other professionals involved with government business and the courts.

In 2006, it was priced for sale at $20 million. Due to limited demand for commercial office space in downtown Memphis, much office space began to decline in value. At 436,280 square feet (40,532 m2), 100 North Main would sell for approximately $46 per square foot. As of 5 January 2012, only 30% of the building is occupied

Famous quotes containing the word history:

There is a constant in the average American imagination and taste, for which the past must be preserved and celebrated in full-scale authentic copy; a philosophy of immortality as duplication. It dominates the relation with the self, with the past, not infrequently with the present, always with History and, even, with the European tradition.
    Umberto Eco (b. 1932)

What would we not give for some great poem to read now, which would be in harmony with the scenery,—for if men read aright, methinks they would never read anything but poems. No history nor philosophy can supply their place.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The history of the world is the record of the weakness, frailty and death of public opinion.
    Samuel Butler (1835–1902)
