Concept
The draft working version of ZIPI was primarily aimed at addressing many limitations of MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface). Unlike MIDI which uses a peer-to-peer serial port connection, ZIPI was designed to run over a star network with a hub in the center. This allowed for faster connection and disconnection, because there was no need to daisy-chain multiple devices. Ethernet 10Base-T was used at the physical layer, but the protocol did not depend on any physical implementation.
There were proposals for querying device capabilities, patch names and other system and patch parameters, as well as uploading and downloading samples into device memory.

Famous quotes containing the word concept:
“Terror is as much a part of the concept of truth as runniness is of the concept of jam. We wouldnt like jam if it didnt, by its very nature, ooze. We wouldnt like truth if it wasnt sticky, if, from time to time, it didnt ooze blood.”
—Jean Baudrillard (b. 1929)
“One concept corrupts and confuses the others. I am not speaking of the Evil whose limited sphere is ethics; I am speaking of the infinite.”
—Jorge Luis Borges (18991986)
“Behind the concept of womans strangeness is the idea that a woman may do anything: she is below society, not bound by its law, unpredictable; an attribute given to every member of the league of the unfortunate.”
—Christina Stead (19021983)
