Death
On 7 April 1889, Karam died near Naples, Italy. His last words were "God ... Lebanon". He is buried in Saint George's Church in Ehden, Lebanon where in 1932 a statue of Karam on his horse was erected. This statue was made by his namesake Youssef Howayek. The Italian hosts place a placard on his grave that reads: "this is the resting place of the Youssef Boutros Karam, the Lebanese Prince". Even though, he was never officially a prince, this title was bestowed upon him affectionately due to his stature, behavior, and moral values.

Famous quotes containing the word death:
“So long as the law considers all these human beings, with beating hearts and living affections, only as so many things belonging to the masterso long as the failure, or misfortune, or imprudence, or death of the kindest owner, may cause them any day to exchange a life of kind protection and indulgence for one of hopeless misery and toilso long it is impossible to make anything beautiful or desirable in the best-regulated administration of slavery.”
—Harriet Beecher Stowe (18111896)
“There is something antique, even, in his style of treating his subject, reminding us that Heroes and Demi-gods, Fates and Furies, still exist; the common man is nothing to him, but after death the hero is apotheosized and has a place in heaven, as in the religion of the Greeks.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“Our love is old, our lives are old,
And death shall come amain:
Should it come today, what man may say
We shall not live again?”
—Langdon Smith (18581908)
