History
The date of Yaizu Jinja’s foundation is unknown. Per shrine tradition it was founded in 409. In the early Heian period Engishiki records, the shrine is mentioned as one of four shrines in Mashizu District of Suruga Province. The shrine was patronized by the Imagawa clan in the Muromachi period, and given revenues of 500 koku for its upkeep. This was reduced to a 70 koku stipend in the Edo period b the Tokugawa shogunate. In 1883, Yaizu Jinja was recognized as a “Prefectural Shrine” under the State Shinto system.

Famous quotes containing the word history:
“When we of the so-called better classes are scared as men were never scared in history at material ugliness and hardship; when we put off marriage until our house can be artistic, and quake at the thought of having a child without a bank-account and doomed to manual labor, it is time for thinking men to protest against so unmanly and irreligious a state of opinion.”
—William James (18421910)
“The history of his present majesty, is a history of unremitting injuries and usurpations ... all of which have in direct object the establishment of an absolute tyranny over these states. To prove this, let facts be submitted to a candid world, for the truth of which we pledge a faith yet unsullied by falsehood.”
—Thomas Jefferson (17431826)
“The whole history of civilisation is strewn with creeds and institutions which were invaluable at first, and deadly afterwards.”
—Walter Bagehot (18261877)
