Wong (surname)

Wong (surname)

Wong is the Jyutping and Hong Kong romanization of two ubiquitous Chinese surnames, – Wang (Chinese: 王) and Huang ( 黃, 黄) – another common Chinese surname, – Wang (汪) – and a host of less common Chinese surnames, including Heng ( 橫, 横), Hong (弘), Hong ( 閎, 闳), and Hong (宏).

Note that while 汪 can be distinguished by its tone, the pronunciation of 王 and 黃 is identical in Cantonese. Therefore, Huang-Wong is sometimes referred to as "Grasshead Wong" or "Big-Stomach Wong" in order to differentiate it from Wang-Wong, the "Three-Stroke Wong".
