  • The OWHA would lobby for a national championship for women. The first Canadian national women's championship was in 1983 and the first corporate sponsor of the event was Shoppers Drug Mart.
  • In 1987, Toronto, Ontario hosted the first ever Women's World Championship. Of note, the tournament was not recognized by the International Ice Hockey Federation. The championship trophy was named the Hazel McCallion World Cup, in honor of Mississauga mayor Hazel McCallion.
