Wise Men of Gotham - Nursery Rhyme

Nursery Rhyme

The Wise Men of Gotham are recalled in a popular nursery rhyme with a Roud Folk Song Index number of 19695, an adaptation of the tale Three Sailors of Gotham. The lyrics are:

Three wise men of Gotham,
They went to sea in a bowl,
And if the bowl had been stronger
My song had been longer.

The rhyme was first recorded in Mother Goose's Melody published around 1765, and from then appeared in many collections.

Famous quotes by nursery rhyme:

What is your fortune, my pretty maid?
‘My face is my fortune, Sir,’ she said.
—Where Are You Going to, My Pretty Maid? Nursery rhyme.

    Yes, I know.
Death sits with his key in my lock.
Not one day is taken for granted.
Even nursery rhymes have put me in hock.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)
