Winnipeg Saints - History

History

The St. Boniface Saints were formed in 1967 when the Winnipeg Rangers were purchased by a local group and relocated to St. Boniface, Manitoba (now part of Winnipeg). In 2000, the team became the Winnipeg Saints when they moved to the Dakota Community Centre in south Winnipeg, their home until the end of the 2009-2010 season. After playing one season out of St. Adolphe, Manitoba, they returned to Winnipeg for the 2011-2012 season, playing out of the St. James Civic Centre.

The Saints won 3 Turnbull Cup Championships as Manitoba Junior ‘A’ Champions (1971, 1981, and 1994), and the Anavet Cup in 1971.

Notable Saints alumni include Mike Ridley, Colton Orr, Russ Romaniuk, and Travis Hamonic.

In the summer of 2012, a group from Virden, Manitoba purchased the Saints, subsequently relocating and renamed them the Virden Oil Capitals.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

The History of the world is not the theatre of happiness. Periods of happiness are blank pages in it, for they are periods of harmony—periods when the antithesis is in abeyance.
    Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831)

All objects, all phases of culture are alive. They have voices. They speak of their history and interrelatedness. And they are all talking at once!
    Camille Paglia (b. 1947)

The history of progress is written in the blood of men and women who have dared to espouse an unpopular cause, as, for instance, the black man’s right to his body, or woman’s right to her soul.
    Emma Goldman (1869–1940)
