Wings Over The Rockies Air and Space Museum

The Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum (WOR) is located on the former grounds of Lowry Air Force Base in Denver, Colorado. The museum, which opened in 1994, is housed in the 40,000 sq ft (4,000 m2) Hangar #1 built in 1939. The museum preserves the history of Lowry AFB's operations from 1938 to 1994 in its collections, archives, and research library. Features of the museum's collection includes Colorado Aviation Historical Society's Alexander Eaglerock biplane built in Englewood, USAF's B-1A Lancer bomber, and many other military and generation aircraft.

In 1997, the Colorado State Legislature passed House Bill 1269 that made the Wings over the Rockies Air and Space Museum the official state air and space museum. The Bill also indicates that Museum will host Colorado Aviation Historical Society's Colorado Aviation Hall of Fame.

Famous quotes containing the words wings, air, space and/or museum:

    Wheeled swiftly, wings emerge from larval-silver hangars.
    Taut motors surge, space-gnawing, into flight;
    Hart Crane (1899–1932)

    I wonder whether mankind could not get along without all these names, which keep increasing every day, and hour, and moment; till at the last the very air will be full of them; and even in a great plain, men will be breathing each other’s breath, owing to the vast multitude of words they use, that consume all the air, just as lamp-burners do gas.
    Herman Melville (1819–1891)

    Time in his little cinema of the heart
    Giving a première to Hate and Pain;
    And Space urbanely keeping us apart.
    Philip Larkin (1922–1986)

    I never can pass by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York without thinking of it not as a gallery of living portraits but as a cemetery of tax-deductible wealth.
    Lewis H. Lapham (b. 1935)
