Winged Victory (novel) - Trivia

Trivia

The title, "Winged Victory", was not VM Yeates' choice - it was forced on him by his original publisher, who wanted the book to appear more patriotic and exciting. Yeates' original choice of title was the much more apt, bleaker "Wingless Victor".

Curiously, the Sphere Books 1969 edition of the book, has an illustration of SE5as dogfighting with Fokker DVIIs on the cover when the only aircraft the main characters fly is the Sopwith Camel. The 1962 reprint of the Jonathan Cape edition, however, has a fly leaf with two Sopwith Camels depicted.

It was a large inspiration in the work of Derek Robinson, particularly the 1971 Booker Prize-nominated Goshawk Squadron.

Famous quotes containing the word trivia:

Pop artists deal with the lowly trivia of possessions and equipment that the present generation is lugging along with it on its safari into the future.
    —J.G. (James Graham)

The most refined skills of color printing, the intricate techniques of wide-angle photography, provide us pictures of trivia bigger and more real than life. We forget that we see trivia and notice only that the reproduction is so good. Man fulfils his dream and by photographic magic produces a precise image of the Grand Canyon. The result is not that he adores nature or beauty the more. Instead he adores his camera—and himself.
    Daniel J. Boorstin (b. 1914)
