Hoel's first wife was Mary Riley, daughter of Daniel Riley, of Cincinnati. His second wife was Elizabeth Hunt, eldest daughter of Dr. Samuel Pancoast Hunt and Elizabeth Thomas, his wife, of Morrow, Warren County, Ohio. Captain Hoel and Elizabeth Hoel had two children: Sarah Elizabeth Hoel, born 18 December 1869, and Rion Hoel, born 15 September 1871. Willam R. Hoel is the great great great grandfather of Steve Hoel a contractor in bedford. He has two children 'Erin 'Bucket' Hoel and William Hoel.
