Later Life

In 1879 Fox was created a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George.

Fox subsequently became involved in movements against alcohol. He continued to undertake considerable physical exercise, climbing Mount Taranaki in 1892, aged 80. He died on 23 June 1893.

The town of Foxton, founded in 1885, was named after Sir William.
