On December 12, 1774, in Burlington, New Jersey, he was married by a civil magistrate to Elizabeth Fenimore, daughter of Richard Fenimore, a Quaker of Rancocas. When Fenimore asked how William intended to support his daughter, the young man answered that he was poor and "she must shift for herself."
