Wilderspool Stadium - Snookers (formerly The Popular Stand)

Snookers (formerly The Popular Stand)

Originally the side was a terraced stand known as the popular stand. The roof which covered it was later placed over the Railway End when the popular stand was knocked down to make way for a snooker complex called Snooker's. Snooker's was a large snooker complex which was built on the opposite side to the Brian Bevan Stand in the 1970s. It had a large glass façade where fans could watch the game from inside the complex. Originally when the snooker complex was built there was seating in front of the building which was covered up and fans, this later became standing terracing in the late 1980s until the terracing was closed down in 1997 as it was deemed a health and safety hazard. When the club moved from Wilderspool, Snooker's remained open for a number of years however it has since closed and the building is unsafe for entering.

Famous quotes containing the word popular:

There is a continual exchange of ideas between all minds of a generation. Journalists, popular novelists, illustrators, and cartoonists adapt the truths discovered by the powerful intellects for the multitude. It is like a spiritual flood, like a gush that pours into multiple cascades until it forms the great moving sheet of water that stands for the mentality of a period.
    Auguste Rodin (1849–1917)
