History
Before Wild Rivers was built, the land was a drive-through zoo called Lion Country Safari, but it went bankrupt and closed in the 1984. Construction on the Wild Rivers "Mountain" began in 1985 and the park itself opened in 1986. The water park utilized a lot of buildings left over from the land's previous occupant. A few years later it opened the first side by side wave pools in the country.

I say similar in nature. You ask me in what does this nature consist? In the ludicrous heightened into the grotesque: the fearful coloured into the horrible: the witty exaggerated into the burlesque: the singular wrought out into the strange and mystical.”

“When the landscape buckles and jerks around, when a dust column of debris rises from the collapse of a block of buildings on bodies that could have been your own, when the staves of history fall awry and the barrel of time bursts apart, some turn to prayer, some to poetry: words in the memory, a stained book carried close to the body, the notebook scribbled by handa center of gravity.”
—Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)
