Diana Ross released a cover version on the RCA label in 1981, peaking at #7 on Billboard's Pop Singles Chart, and number four in the UK Singles Chart. The success of Ross' cover helped reintroduce a new generation of audiences to Lymon. Unlike the original, this version contains echoes of the soul of the 1960s. A remix of Ross' cover peaked at #36 on the UK charts in July, 1994.

“The 19-year-old Diana ... decided to make her career that of wife. Today that can be a very, very iffy line of work.... And what sometimes happens to the women who pursue it is the best argument imaginable for teaching girls that they should always be able to take care of themselves.”
—Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
“The New Yorker will be the magazine which is not edited for the old lady from Dubuque.”
—Harold W. Ross (18921951)
“Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the sabbath day.”
