Whitley Strieber - Cultural Influences

Cultural Influences

In the TV series Babylon 5, there is an alien race that is similar to the Greys in Communion. This race is named the Streib after Whitley Strieber.

In an episode of The X-Files, "Jose Chung's From Outer Space", the cover of the book From Outer Space is a parody of the cover of Communion (the difference being that the alien on the cover is depicted smoking a cigarette). Another episode, "Detour", is a scene-for-scene remake of the film version of Strieber's book, Wolfen.

In the 120th book in The Hardy Boys series, The Case of the Cosmic Kidnapping (1993), the character of "Hodding Wheatley", a Connecticut-based writer who had undergone UFO experiences, is inspired by Strieber, as the surname of the character makes plain ("Wheatley" being Whitley).

Swedish Progressive Metal band Evergrey wrote their 2001 concept album, In Search of Truth, around the ideas presented in Communion after the band's singer Tom S. Englund read the book.

Famous quotes containing the words cultural and/or influences:

To recover the fatherhood idea, we must fashion a new cultural story of fatherhood. The moral of today’s story is that fatherhood is superfluous. The moral of the new story must be that fatherhood is essential.
    David Blankenhorn (20th century)

Professors of literature, who for the most part are genteel but mediocre men, can make but a poor defense of their profession, and the professors of science, who are frequently men of great intelligence but of limited interests and education, feel a politely disguised contempt for it; and thus the study of one of the most pervasive and powerful influences on human life is traduced and neglected.
    Yvor Winters (1900–1968)
