"Where You Are" was written by Louis Biancaniello and Sam Watters (the two also produced the track) with writing assistance from Adamantia Stamatopoulou and Simpson's then-boyfriend (now ex-husband) Nick Lachey. Due to the sentimental lyrics of the single, it was also included on the soundtrack of the 2000 teen film Here on Earth.
