Wheels (magazine) - History

History

Wheels was founded in May 1953 by editor Athol Yeomans. With the help of a colleague, Yeomans planned the first copy of Wheels in a stationery room of Hudson Publications in Sydney. Wheels was the first Australian car magazine to appear in local newsagents and was a best seller from the start. Before its inception, only European and American publications were available in Australia. Wheels was also the first magazine to actually road test cars. In the 1950s, road testing cars was something of a rarity as major makes did not allow it.

Since 1963, Wheels have annually announced their Car of the Year award, although this has been withheld in 1972, 1979 and 1986.

It was announced in September 2010 that Bill Thomas, former deputy editor of BBC Top Gear Magazine in the UK, would take over as editor in November 2010.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

I feel as tall as you.
Ellis Meredith, U.S. suffragist. As quoted in History of Woman Suffrage, vol. 4, ch. 14, by Susan B. Anthony and Ida Husted Harper (1902)

History has neither the venerableness of antiquity, nor the freshness of the modern. It does as if it would go to the beginning of things, which natural history might with reason assume to do; but consider the Universal History, and then tell us,—when did burdock and plantain sprout first?
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

The only thing worse than a liar is a liar that’s also a hypocrite!
There are only two great currents in the history of mankind: the baseness which makes conservatives and the envy which makes revolutionaries.
    Edmond De Goncourt (1822–1896)
