Wheel & Axle Plant

Wheel & Axle Plant

The name Wheel & Axle Plant has been changed to Rail Wheel Factory (RWF).

RWF was established for manufacturing wheels and aAxles required for coaches and wagons of the Indian Railways.

Built with World Bank assistance, it was inaugurated by Mrs Indira Gandhi on 15 September 1984.

Cast steel wheel manufacture through controlled pressure pouring. A ladle of molten steel placed in a pouring tank is sealed with an airtight cover. A ceramic tube is at the center. Air is pushed inside this, which pushes the molten steel up through the tube into a graphite mould positioned above the pouring tube. Molten steel fills up the mould, and the wheel is cast.

About 2000 people work at the plant, turning out about:

  • 90,000 wheels per year of 4 types
  • 48,000 axles per year of 15 types

Turnover of Rs 2.3 billion.

The plant is ISO 9002 Certified.

RWF is situated in Bangalore, India.
