Wharton's Jelly - Stem Cells

Stem Cells

Cells in Wharton's jelly express several stem cell genes, including telomerase. They can be extracted, cultured, and induced to differentiate into mature cell types such as neurons. Wharton's jelly is therefore a potential source of adult stem cells (also see the more common method of storing cord blood).

Famous quotes containing the words stem and/or cells:

    Bite down
on the bitter stem of your nectared
    rose, you know
the dreamy stench of death and fling
    magenta shawls delicately
    about your brown shoulders laughing.
    Denise Levertov (b. 1923)

Madness is locked beneath. It goes into tissues, is swallowed by the cells. The cells go mad. Cancer is their flag. Cancer is the growth of madness denied.
    Norman Mailer (b. 1923)
