Statement of Weyl Character Formula

The character of an irreducible representation V of a compact Lie group G is given by

where

  • ρ is the half the sum of the positive roots;
  • W is the Weyl group;
  • λ is the highest weight of the irreducible representation V;
  • α runs over the positive roots of the Lie group.
  • is the length of the Weyl group element, defined to be the minimal number of reflections with respect to simple roots such that equals the product of those reflections.

Famous quotes containing the words statement of, statement, character and/or formula:

    The most distinct and beautiful statement of any truth must take at last the mathematical form.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)

    The new statement is always hated by the old, and, to those dwelling in the old, comes like an abyss of skepticism.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

    The first thing to be done by a biographer in estimating character is to examine the stubs of his victim’s cheque-books.
    Silas Weir Mitchell (1829–1914)

    Beauty, like all other qualities presented to human experience, is relative; and the definition of it becomes unmeaning and useless in proportion to its abstractness. To define beauty not in the most abstract, but in the most concrete terms possible, not to find a universal formula for it, but the formula which expresses most adequately this or that special manifestation of it, is the aim of the true student of aesthetics.
    Walter Pater (1839–1894)
