Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League - Member Schools

Member Schools

The league is responsible for administering the interscholastic athletic participation/competition of public school districts and private schools located in Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Lawrence, Washington, Westmoreland counties in Western Pennsylvania.

Exceptions include:

  • Ligonier Valley School District in Westmoreland County, which opts to participate in District 6.
  • Pittsburgh Public Schools in Allegheny County, which makes up District 8. The Pittsburgh "City League" has applied and begins to have some of its sports teams at various high schools join the WPIAL in the 2012-13 school year. Football and basketball do not join the WPIAL.
  • Slippery Rock and Moniteau high schools in Butler County, who participate in District 10 and 9 respectively.
  • Wilmington Area School District in Lawrence and Mercer Counties, participates in District 10.
  • Altoona Area High School in Blair County from District 6, was granted "conditional membership" to join District 7 in the Fall of 2010. The condition stated: If the PIAA does approve an expansion from four to six classifications in football, the WPIAL will look at its alignments to see if the schools' inclusion will benefit the WPIAL's scheduling. As of Fall 2012, the school is still in District 6. "
  • Hollidaysburg Area High School in Blair County from District 6 was granted "conditional membership" to join District 7 in the Fall of 2010. The condition stated: If the PIAA does approve an expansion from four to six classifications in football, the WPIAL will look at its alignments to see if the schools' inclusion will benefit the WPIAL's scheduling. As of Fall 2012, the school is still in District 6."
  • McDowell High School just outside of Erie in Erie County from District 10, was granted "conditional membership" to join District 7 in the Fall of 2010. The condition stated: If the PIAA does approve an expansion from four to six classifications in football, the WPIAL will look at its alignments to see if the schools' inclusion will benefit the WPIAL's scheduling. As of Fall 2012, the school is still in District 10."
