The Western Nimba Toad or Mt. Nimba Viviparous Toad (Nimbaphrynoides occidentalis) is a species of toad from highlands in the Mount Nimba region of Côte d'Ivoire and Guinea. This Critically Endangered species is threatened by habitat loss, and mining of iron ore and bauxite. This and the equally threatened N. liberiensis are the only frogs/toads that are viviparous; it is possible liberiensis should be included as a subspecies of N. occidentalis.
Famous quotes containing the words western and/or toad:
“One good reason for the popularity of reductionism among the philosophical outposts of the Western Establishment is that it can be, and is, used as a device for trying to take the wind, so to speak, out of the sails of Marxism.... In essence reductionism is a kind of anti-Marxist caricature of Marxist determinism. It is what anti-Marxists pretend that Marxist determinism is.”
—Claud Cockburn (19041981)
“Ask a toad what beauty is, the supreme beauty, the to kalon. He will tell you it is his lady toad with her two big round eyes coming out of her little head, her large flat snout, yellow belly, brown back.”
—Voltaire [François Marie Arouet] (16941778)
