Principles of Osteopathic Medicine
The WVSOM curriculum places heavy emphasis on A.T. Still’s four principles of Osteopathic Medicine. They are:
- 1. The body is a unit; the person is a unit of mind, body and spirit
- 2. The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing and health maintenance
- 3. Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated
- 4. Rational treatment is based on the above three principles

Famous quotes containing the words principles of, principles and/or medicine:
“The machines that are first invented to perform any particular movement are always the most complex, and succeeding artists generally discover that, with fewer wheels, with fewer principles of motion, than had originally been employed, the same effects may be more easily produced. The first systems, in the same manner, are always the most complex.”
—Adam Smith (17231790)
“It must appear impossible, that theism could, from reasoning, have been the primary religion of human race, and have afterwards, by its corruption, given birth to polytheism and to all the various superstitions of the heathen world. Reason, when obvious, prevents these corruptions: When abstruse, it keeps the principles entirely from the knowledge of the vulgar, who are alone liable to corrupt any principle or opinion.
”
—David Hume (17111776)
“Socialized medicine, some still cry, but its long been socialized, with those covered paying for those who are underinsured. American medicine is simply socialized badly, penny wise and pound foolish.”
—Anna Quindlen (b. 1952)
