West Somerset Mineral Railway - Extension Beyond The Head of The Incline

Extension Beyond The Head of The Incline

Construction as far as Raleigh's Cross, at the head of the incline, had cost £82,000 c0ompared with the estimate of £65,000 for construction of the entire line. Further construction was delayed, therefore, but it resumed in 1863 and reached Gupworthy in September 1864. Famous quotes containing the words extension, head and/or incline:

The motive of science was the extension of man, on all sides, into Nature, till his hands should touch the stars, his eyes see through the earth, his ears understand the language of beast and bird, and the sense of the wind; and, through his sympathy, heaven and earth should talk with him. But that is not our science.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882)

I tied down time with a rope
    but it came back.
    Then
I put my head in a death bowl
and my eyes shut up like clams.
    They didn’t come back.
    Anne Sexton (1928–1974)

We took advantage of [the Indians’] ignorance and inexperience to incline them the more easily toward treachery, lewdness, avarice, and every sort of inhumanity and cruelty, after the example and pattern of our ways.
    Michel de Montaigne (1533–1592)
