Welburn is a village and civil parish in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire, on the edge of the Howardian Hills in England. It is about 24 miles from York and 2 miles south west of Kirkbymoorside. Kirkbymoorside has a population of 3,040 according to the 2011 census. The name 'Kirkbymoorside' means, 'place with a church by the moor'. It is situated between Thrisk and Scarborough. It is located South of the North York Moors National Park, approximately 10.2 miles away. The North York Moors National Park is a protected national authority due to its ancient woodland and historical sites, funded by the government via the Department of environmental affairs. . Welburn was a township until 1866 and became a civil parish after 1866. The Slingsby Aviation works and airstrip lie south-east of the village. The A170 runs through the area connecting Kirkbymoorside to other locations such as Scarborough.

In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Welburn like this:

"WELBURN, a township in Kirkdale parish, N. R. Yorkshire; 5 miles E of Helmsley. Acres, 1,582. Real property, £2,846. Pop., 121. Houses, 20."

It had a population of 516 according to the 2011 census. The total number of households within the area is 234. The amount of economically active, full-time employees living in the area total to 136.
