WE TV - History

History

WE tv was originally known as Romance Classics when it launched on September 1, 1997. Similar to sister station, American Movie Classics, it originally aired commercial free movies, mostly in the romantic drama/comedy and television miniseries genres. This format was abandoned in 2001 when the station was re-branded as WE: Women's Entertainment. In 2006, Rainbow Media re-branded the channel once again this time under the name WE tv.

The channel showed the popular Australian, Logie Award Winning television series McLeod's Daughters for seasons 1-3. The channel dropped the show in April 2006. WE has since been under scrutiny and criticized for its decision to cancel their top rated show for less expensive reality television. A major campaign by fans to bring the show to another network in the United States has been in the works.

The channel format in recent years has shifted to reality shows, with several having topics related to weddings (ex. Bridezillas, Big Easy Brides, My Fair Wedding with David Tutera). infoMania poked fun at the abundance of wedding themed shows in their segment. Other popular shows on the network include Secret Lives of Women, The Locator, and Amazing Cakes.

In January 2011, WE tv Network confirmed that it had signed Toni Braxton for a reality series, entitled Braxton Family Values, which will be marketed as one of the network's flagship shows. To prepare for the networks heavily anticipated new show lineup, WE tv has also given the network a new logo and marketing tagline: WE tv, “Life As WE Know It. ” The show, Braxton Family Values, series debuted April, 12, 2011, and looks at the relationship between the singer/songwriter Braxton, her mom, and her four sisters; Trina, Tamar, Traci and Towanda — all aspiring singers themselves, along with the interpersonal relationships of each family member. The show will also look at Braxton's heavily publicized separation from estranged husband, singer Keri Lewis.

In March 2012, WE tv confirmed that the network had ordered 14 episodes of "Kendra on Top", a new reality show following the lives of Kendra Wilkinson and Hank Basket. The show picks up where "Kendra" (on E! for 4 seasons) left off. Kendra said the show focuses on "motherhood, parenthood, and wife hood".Kendra On Top premiered on June, 5, 2012 and continutes to air every Tuesday night at 10PM EST.

Famous quotes containing the word history:

Boys forget what their country means by just reading “the land of the free” in history books. Then they get to be men, they forget even more. Liberty’s too precious a thing to be buried in books.
    Sidney Buchman (1902–1975)

To history therefore I must refer for answer, in which it would be an unhappy passage indeed, which should shew by what fatal indulgence of subordinate views and passions, a contest for an atom had defeated well founded prospects of giving liberty to half the globe.
    Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826)

A great proportion of the inhabitants of the Cape are always thus abroad about their teaming on some ocean highway or other, and the history of one of their ordinary trips would cast the Argonautic expedition into the shade.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
