The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) is an global multi-stakeholder partnership organization that works to improve the lives of poor people by enhancing collaboration among sector agencies and professionals around sanitation and water supply. Its vision is centered upon a belief that sanitation, hygiene, and water supply coverage is a universal right and that people and communities are catalysts of change. Through this work WSSCC contributes to the broader goals of poverty eradication, health and environmental improvement, gender equality and long-term social and economic development. WSSCC's Secretariat is based in Geneva, Switzerland and is hosted by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).
The activities undertaken by WSSCC were recognized in the United Nations General Assembly resolution A/RES/45/181 of 21 December 1990, as such it has been mandated by the United Nations system to advance work in the field of sanitation, hygiene and water quality. WSSCC work's towards this vision by enhancing collaboration, advocacy and by creating sanitation demand. WSSCC's operational work is divided into Networking & Knowledge Management, Advocacy & Communications and the Global Sanitation Fund.
WSSCC's mission is to ensure sustainable sanitation sanitation, better hygiene and safe drinking water water supply for all people. It seeks to achieve its mission through working towards the following key outcomes: 1. ACCESS AND USE – Tens of millions of unserved people in 10-15 sanitation-needy countries gain access to and sustainably use improved sanitation and adopt safe hygienic behaviours 2. EQUITY – Among those who gain access, poor and marginalized people and groups are identified and preferentially supported 3. INVOLVEMENT – More individuals, organizations and businesses become involved in sanitation and hygiene work 4. KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS – Individuals and agencies working in sanitation and hygiene improve their knowledge and skills
WSSCC is governed by its Steering Committee which has been chaired by Professor Anna Tibaijuka, former Executive Director of United Nations Human Settlements Programmesince 2010. The Executive Director is Chris Williams, a US national.
