Route Description
SR 119 begins in the small community of Hoodsport, at an intersection with US 101. Named "Lake Cushman Road," it climbs into the foothills of the Olympics, heading northwest past Hoodsport Trail State Park. Soon after, it runs along the eastern shore of Lake Cushman, then through the Camp Cushman and Recreation Park. At a "T" intersection, SR-119 heads west concurrently as Forest Highway 24 and "Staircase Road". The highway ends 1.65 miles later, changing from asphalt to gravel, as the Forest Highway 24/Staircase Road designation continues westward.
Every year the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) conducts a series of surveys on its highways in the state to measure traffic volume. This is expressed in terms of average annual daily traffic (AADT), which is a measure of traffic volume for any average day of the year. In 2009, WSDOT calculated that as few as 320 cars traveled on the highway near the western terminus, and as many as 3,400 cars used the highway at the eastern terminus.
