Robert Baden-Powell asked his brother Warington to head up the first specialized branch of the Boy Scouts Association. Warington Baden-Powell agreed, and Sea Scouting was officially organized in England in 1912. Warington then wrote the first official Sea Scout manual, Sea Scouting and Seamanship for Boys. Famous quotes containing the words sea and/or scouts:
“In the midst of this chopping sea of civilized life, such are the clouds and storms and quicksands and thousand-and-one items to be allowed for, that a man has to live, if he would not founder and go to the bottom and not make his port at all, by dead reckoning, and he must be a great calculator indeed who succeeds.”
—Henry David Thoreau (18171862)
“The medieval town, with frieze
Of boy scouts from Nagoya?”
—John Ashbery (b. 1927)
