Bridge
At the bridge table in the 1930s, Herbert was one member of the Austria national team led by Paul Stern. The team won four of the first six European teams championships, with Herbert playing in 1933 and 1937. The 1937 field included two teams from the United States and doubled as the first world championship tournament.
"Herbert" is a bridge convention attributed to Walter Herbert, bidding the first step rather than two notrump with a weak hand in response to two of a suit.

“Oh, who will now be able to relate how Pantagruel behaved in face of these three hundred giants! —François Rabelais (14941553)
“I see four nuns
who sit like a bridge club,
their faces poked out
from under their habits,”
—Anne Sexton (19281974)
“I was at work that morning. Someone came riding like mad
Over the bridge and up the roadFarmer Roufs little lad.
Bareback he rode; he had no hat; he hardly stopped to say,
Morgans men are coming, Frau, theyre galloping on this way.”
—Constance Fenimore Woolson (18401894)
