Famous quotes containing the word crimes:

Therefore with idle hands and head I sit
In late December before the fire’s daze
Punished by crimes of which I would be quit.
    Allen Tate (1899–1979)

The worst of crimes. All the other crimes are virtues beside it: all the other dishonors are chivalry itself by comparison. Poverty blights whole cities; spreads horrible pestilences; strikes dead the very souls of all who come within sight, sound, or smell of it.
    George Bernard Shaw (1856–1950)

... how have I used rivers, how have I used wars
to escape writing of the worst thing of all—
not the crimes of other, not even our own death,
but the failure to want our freedom passionately enough
so that blighted elms, sick rivers, massacres would seem
mere emblems of that desecration of ourselves?
    Adrienne Rich (b. 1929)
