Perfumery
Poucher was a research chemist by profession, working on the chemistry of perfumes. His 1923 textbook 'Perfumes, Cosmetics and Soaps' has been revised and reprinted over the years and is now in its 10th edition. He was frequently given leave of absence by Yardley for part of the year to pursue his mountain photography. His profession caused some amusement in climbing circles, where he was occasionally described as "a perfume salesman who wears his wares".
In May 2012 Poucher was the subject of a BBC Radio 4 programme The Perfumed Mountaineer presented by geographer Hayden Lorimer.

Famous quotes containing the word perfumery:
“I see that every man that went in had his pockets bulging, or something muffled up under his coatand I see it warnt no perfumery either, not by a long sight. I smelt sickly eggs by the barrel, and rotten cabbages, and such things; and if I know the signs of a dead cat being around, and I bet I do, there was sixty-four of them went in. I shoved in there for a minute, but it was too various for me, I couldnt stand it.”
—Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (18351910)
