Volusianus (L. Petronius Taurus Volusianus) - Death

Death

It is normally assumed that Volusianus was done to death as a leading minister of Gallienus in the senatorial-inspired purge that followed the murder of that prince in 268. However, some at least of his family seem to have escaped/been spared - see preceding section.

Famous quotes containing the word death:

It is a sign of creeping inner death when we can no longer praise the living.
    Eric Hoffer (1902–1983)

Men are fools that wish to die!
Is ‘t not fine to dance and sing
When the bells of death do ring?
Unknown. Hey Nonny No! (L. 2–4)

To die proudly when it is no longer possible to live proudly. Death freely chosen, death at the right time, brightly and cheerfully accomplished amid children and witnesses: then a real farewell is still possible, as the one who is taking leave is still there; also a real estimate of what one has wished, drawing the sum of one’s life—all in opposition to the wretched and revolting comedy that Christianity has made of the hour of death.
    Friedrich Nietzsche (1844–1900)
