Vistula Land - World War I

World War I

Further information: Poland during World War I

In 1915 during World War I the Kingdom of Poland was looted and abandoned by the retreating Russian army, which tried to emulate the scorched earth policy of the 1812 invasion. The Russians also evicted and deported hundreds of thousands of its inhabitants suspected of collaborating with the enemy.

During World War I, in 1915 the area was occupied by the Central Powers who proposed the Kingdom of Poland (1916–1918). In 1917 Russia ceded, in the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, all Polish territories it had possessed to the German Empire and Austria-Hungary.

Famous quotes containing the words war i, world war, world and/or war:

War talk by men who have been in a war is always interesting; whereas moon talk by a poet who has not been in the moon is likely to be dull.
Mark Twain [Samuel Langhorne Clemens] (1835–1910)

One ... aspect of the case for World War II is that while it was still a shooting affair it taught us survivors a great deal about daily living which is valuable to us now that it is, ethically at least, a question of cold weapons and hot words.
    M.F.K. Fisher (1908–1992)

Freedom-loving people around the world must say ... I am a refugee in a crowded boat foundering off the coast of Vietnam. I am Laotian, a Cambodian, a Cuban, and a Miskito Indian in Nicaragua. I, too, am a potential victim of totalitarianism.
    Ronald Reagan (b. 1911)

You went to meet the shell’s embrace of fire
On Vimy Ridge; and when you fell that day
The war seemed over more for you than me,
But now for me than you the other way.
    Robert Frost (1874–1963)
