Vista Rock is an outcropping of schist located in Central Park in Manhattan, New York City. It is one of the park's highest natural elevations with Summit Park, as it stands 130 feet. The natural rock was tunneled through for the innovative sunken transverse roadway that still carries commercial and other traffic unobtrusively through the Park.
At the core of Central Park, Vista Rock offers a clear view over Turtle Pond and Delacorte Theater. In 1867, one of the designers of Central Park, Calvert Vaux, decided to develop this area by building Belvedere Castle on the top of the rock, overlooking the Croton reservoir, site of the Great Lawn.

Famous quotes containing the words vista and/or rock:
“Softly, in the dusk, a woman is singing to me;
Taking me back down the vista of years, till I see
A child sitting under the piano, in the boom of the tingling strings
And pressing the small, poised feet of a mother who smiles as she
sings.”
—D.H. (David Herbert)
“In Little Rock the people bear
Babes, and comb and part their hair
And watch the want ads, put repair
To roof and latch.”
