Works, Fairy Tale Series
In the 1950s, Virginia Haviland was a pioneer in attempting to collect international fairy tales into a series of volumes that were more accessible to children. While still a Boston librarian, Haviland submitted a proposal for her Favorite Fairy Tales series to Little, Brown and Company, who accepted and published her books in hard cover ca 1959 - 1971. The books were republished in trade paperback by Beech Tree in the mid-90's. Famous quotes containing the words fairy, tale and/or series:
“What is a novel? I say: an invented story. At the same time a story which, though invented has the power to ring true. True to what? True to life as the reader knows life to be or, it may be, feels life to be. And I mean the adult, the grown-up reader. Such a reader has outgrown fairy tales, and we do not want the fantastic and the impossible. So I say to you that a novel must stand up to the adult tests of reality.”
—Elizabeth Bowen (18991973)
“In the tale properwhere there is no space for development of character or for great profusion and variety of incidentmere construction is, of course, far more imperatively demanded than in the novel.”
—Edgar Allan Poe (18091849)
“Through a series of gradual power losses, the modern parent is in danger of losing sight of her own child, as well as her own vision and style. Its a very big price to pay emotionally. Too bad its often accompanied by an equally huge price financially.”
—Sonia Taitz (20th century)
