The airport is owned and operated by the Government of the VI (UK). The government purchased the airport from Little Dix Bay Resort for $2.9 million in 2005. In January, 2010 the airport was closed for major construction work. It reopened in December, 2010 as an Uncertificated Airport with Limitations and Restrictions put in place by the ASSI regulatory agency. It is currently restricted to a small handful of airlines that must be fully approved by both ASSI and the FAA to operate at the field. Two of the more long time and prominent VIJ carriers are Air Sunshine that offers scheduled service and Island Birds which offers on demand air charters.

Famous quotes containing the words virgin and/or airport:

    A hidden strength
Which if Heav’n gave it, may be term’d her own:
    ‘Tis chastity, my brother, chastity:
She that has that, is clad in compleat steel,
And like a quiver’d Nymph with Arrows keen
May trace huge Forests, and unharbour’d Heaths,
Infamous Hills, and sandy perilous wildes,
Where through the sacred rayes of Chastity,
No savage fierce, Bandite, or mountaneer
Will dare to soyl her Virgin purity,
    John Milton (1608–1674)

It was like taking a beloved person to the airport and returning to an empty house. I miss the people. I miss the world.
    Susan Sontag (b. 1933)
