Last Years

In January-February 1934, Chatto exchanged letters with Krupskaya (Lenin’s widow). On March 18, 1934 he gave a talk about his reminiscences of Vladimir Lenin. He wrote to Georgi Dimitrov, Comintern’s Secretary-General, on September 9, 1935: “For three years I have been kept away from active work in the Comintern.” Clemens Palme Dutt (the brother of Rajani Palme Dutt), mentioned having seen Chatto for the last time in 1936/37 at the department of ethnography of the Academy of Science in Leningrad.

Viren was arrested on July 15, 1937 during the Great Purge of Stalin. His name appeared on a death list among 184 other persons, which was signed on August 31, 1937 by Stalin, Molotov, Voroshilov, Zhdanov and Kaganovich. The death sentence was pronounced by Military Collegium of the Supreme Court of the USSR on September 2, 1937 and Chatto was executed the same day.

On 10 July 1938, Nambiar, Viren’s brother-in-law, wrote to Nehru about the arrest. He replied on July 21, agreeing to try to find out about Viren’s fate.

Famous quotes containing the word years:

Youth is rather to be pitied than envied by people in years since it is doomed to toil through the rugged road of life which the others have passed through, in search of happiness that is not to be met with in it and that, at the highest, can be compounded for only by the blessing of a contented mind.
    Samuel Richardson (1689–1761)

We need not have the loftiest mind to understand that here is no lasting and real satisfaction, that our pleasures are only vanity, that our evils are infinite, and, lastly, that death, which threatens us every moment, must infallibly place us within a few years under the dreadful necessity of being forever either annihilated or unhappy.
    Blaise Pascal (1623–1662)
