Most of the people in southern Tamil Nadu, especially in Tuticorin district, Kanyakumari district and Tirunelveli district,AND MADURAI DISTRICT support Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi as this party favours the rights of the Christian and Muslim minorities. Fishermen of the southern coastal districts support Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi as this party alone fought for the fishermen's security against the Sri Lankan Navy. For this reason, party leader Thol. Thirumavalavan's visit to Sri Lanka was forbidden by the Sri Lankan government. The party also declared that Mahinda Rajapaksa should be charged with war crimes for the alleged assassination of thousands of innocent Tamil people during war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. In the Parliament of India in May 2012, Thirumavalavan raised the issue of the Ambedkar cartoon, sparking a controversy that rocked Parliament.
