Victorian Legislative Assembly - Membership and Elections

Membership and Elections

The Assembly consists of 88 members, each coming from a single-member electorate. These are commonly known as seats. They are intended to represent approximately the same population in each electorate. Voting is by full-preference instant-runoff voting, as with the equivalent federal lower house, the Australian House of Representatives.

Each member is elected for a fixed term of 4 years, with elections occurring on the last Saturday of November every 4 years. There are no limits to the number of terms for which a member may seek election.

Famous quotes containing the words membership and/or elections:

The two real political parties in America are the Winners and the Losers. The people don’t acknowledge this. They claim membership in two imaginary parties, the Republicans and the Democrats, instead.
    Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. (b. 1922)

In my public statements I have earnestly urged that there rested upon government many responsibilities which affect the moral and spiritual welfare of our people. The participation of women in elections has produced a keener realization of the importance of these questions and has contributed to higher national ideals. Moreover, it is through them that our national ideals are ingrained in our children.
    Herbert Hoover (1874–1964)
