Vicente Y. Emano - Controversy

Controversy

In 1998 Emano was removed as governor of Misamis Oriental by the Comelec after a recount of votes. The Commission on Elections (Comelec) pronounced Emano guilty of charge that he cheated in the 1995 election. He was replaced by his political rival Ruthie Guingona.

During his time as vice-mayor from 2007-2010 Emano showed up in the council session only once.

In the 2010 mayoral election Emano ran against former congressman and Carmen Barangay Chairman Rolando "Klarex" Uy. Uy lost to Emano by just over 2,000 votes. Uy filed a complain after the discovery of election materials in the city dump and a private junk shop.

After an apocalyptic flash flood disaster in December 2011 caused by storm Sendong with more than thousand casualties and hundreds still missing a civic group called "Save CDO" (CDO for Cagayan de Oro) started a signature campaign, a so called recall, to oust Emano from office. They accuse him not to have warned the public before the storm and not ordering an evacuation of flood endangered zones in the city. This campaign was not successful since Philippine law does not allow a recall less than one year before the next election (May 2013).

Emano ordered the dead victims of the 2011 flash flood to be dumped in a landfill in the city instead of funeral homes.

Famous quotes containing the word controversy:

“And therefore, as when there is a controversy in an account, the parties must by their own accord, set up for right Reason, the Reason of some Arbitrator, or Judge, to whose sentence, they will both stand, or their controversy must either come to blows, or be undecided, for want of a right Reason constituted by Nature; so is it also in all debates of what kind soever.”
    —Thomas Hobbes (1579–1688)

“Ours was a highly activist administration, with a lot of controversy involved ... but I’m not sure that it would be inconsistent with my own political nature to do it differently if I had it to do all over again.”
—Jimmy Carter (James Earl Carter, Jr.)
