Vice President of Suriname

Vice President of Suriname is the second highest political position in Suriname. The Vice President is elected in the same indirect way as the President in the National Assembly of Suriname, with two-thirds of votes. If no candidate gets majority after three rounds of votes, the election is carried in a special People's Assembly, which includes also municipal representatives. In this People's Assembly only the majority of votes (half plus one) is needed to be elected.

The position of Vice President was created in the Constitution of 1987, when the position of Prime Minister of Suriname was abolished. The Vice President is charged with the day-to-day management of the Council of Ministers and is as such responsible to the President.

Robert Ameerali has been the incumbent Vice President of Suriname since August 12, 2010.

Famous quotes containing the words vice and/or president:

Is a civilization naturally backward because it is different? Outside of cannibalism, which can be matched in this country, at least, by lynching, there is no vice and no degradation in native African customs which can begin to touch the horrors thrust upon them by white masters. Drunkenness, terrible diseases, immorality, all these things have been gifts of European civilization.
    —W.E.B. (William Edward Burghardt)

There is a potential 4-6 percentage point net gain for the President [George Bush] by replacing Dan Quayle on the ticket with someone of neutral stature.
