Vernaccia Di San Gimignano - Vernaccia in Literature

Vernaccia in Literature

Vernaccia is mentioned by Dante Alighieri (Purgatorio XXIV) as leading to Pope Martin IV's gluttony. He ate Bolsena eels pickled in the wine.

:ebbe la Santa Chiesa in le sue braccia:
dal Torso fu, e purga per digiuno
l’anguille di Bolsena e la vernaccia.

Vernaccia was also praised by Francesco Redi in his work, "Baccio in Toscana" (1685)..

Famous quotes containing the word literature:

The newspapers, I perceive, devote some of their columns specially to politics or government without charge; and this, one would say, is all that saves it; but as I love literature and to some extent the truth also, I never read those columns at any rate. I do not wish to blunt my sense of right so much.
    Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862)
