Vermont Street (San Francisco)

Vermont Street is a north-south street located in the Potrero Hill district of San Francisco, California. It is a part of a series of streets in the Potrero Hill district which are named after American states. It begins at Division Street near the South of Market area, and runs south, paralleling the U.S. Route 101 freeway. The street ends when it meets 22nd Street.

A section of the street between 20th and 22nd Street, near McKinley Square, features a series of seven sharp turns. This has led the street to be dubbed the crookedest in the world in competition with the better-known Lombard Street (Vermont, while steeper than Lombard, has fewer turns). In an episode of Fact or Fiction on the Travel Channel, Jayms Ramirez measured the sinuosity of both Lombard and Vermont streets, and proved that Vermont is indeed more crooked (with a sinuosity of 1.56 versus 1.2 for Lombard Street).

Unlike Lombard's red brick construction, Vermont is made of concrete.

Vermont Street is featured in a chase scene in the Clint Eastwood movie Magnum Force (1973).

Famous quotes containing the words vermont and/or street:

In order to get to East Russet you take the Vermont Central as far as Twitchell’s Falls and change there for Torpid River Junction, where a spur line takes you right into Gormley. At Gormley you are met by a buckboard which takes you back to Torpid River Junction again.
    Robert Benchley (1889–1945)

I marched in with the men afoot; a gallant show they made as they marched up High Street to the depot. Lucy and Mother Webb remained several hours until we left. I saw them watching me as I stood on the platform at the rear of the last car as long as they could see me. Their eyes swam. I kept my emotion under control enough not to melt into tears.
    Rutherford Birchard Hayes (1822–1893)
