The Rams' primary rivals are Old Dominion and conference and long-standing crosstown rival University of Richmond. In the 1970s, their first six games were decided at the buzzer. For the past 35 years, the two schools have competed annually in the Black & Blue Classic. The success of the two school's basketball programs was highlighted in the 2011 NCAA tournament, as Richmond and VCU both reached the Sweet Sixteen and the Final Four, respectively. VCU has been among the top basketball teams in the Commonwealth of Virginia, earning a berth into the 2011 NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament.
